Virtual Private Network (VPN)

What is VPN (Virtual Private Network)?
VPN is the abbreviation for Virtual Private Network.

VPN also allows two offices to be linked together across the Internet and the resources can be shared by all the desktops as if the two offices are part of a LAN (Local Area Network). Usually, this type of VPN is called IPSec VPN.

VPN allows traveling employees to connect to the office network through the Internet and access all the resources as if the employees are part of the LAN (Local Area Network). Usually, this type of VPN is called PPTP-VPN.

Note: VPN is included in GW400, GW600 but is an optional feature for GW500 or GW700.

Can the GallantWEB provide VPN Service?
Yes. The GallantWEB provides both PPTP and IPSec services (please refer to "What is VPN?"). Unlike many PPTP VPN routers which only supports PPTP passing-through, which means that an additional PPTP server (NT or others) is required, the GallantWEB is a perfect PPTP server idea for small and medium offices which cannot afford an NT server.

Note: VPN is included in GW400, GW600 but is an optional feature for GW500 or GW700.

What type of VPN can the GallantWEB provide?
The GallantWEB provides PPTP VPN to allow remote telecommuters to connect to the office network and IPSec VPN to link multiple offices networks togethe.r

Unlike many PPTP VPN router which only supports PPTP passing-through, which means that an additional PPTP server (NT or others) is required, GallantWEB VPN is a perfect PPTP server idea for small and medium offices which cannot afford an NT server.

What are the requirements to provide VPN on the GallantWEB?
GallantWEB would require a fixed IP Address in order to provide VPN service.

Is the GallantWEB VPN compatible to VPN products from other vendors?
The GallantWEB's PPTP VPN is compatible to all Microsoft VPN Client included in Windows Operating Systems. GallantWEB's PPTP VPN is a PPTP server from which all Microsoft windows clients can accessto use office resources remotely.

As for IPSec VPN, GallantWEB currently is designed for GallantWEB-to-GallantWEB connection only. Compatibility with other IPSec VPN vendors has not been tested nor is it guaranteed.

Can the GallantWEB support Server-Client IPSec VPN?
No, unless the workstation is running on Linux Operating System. In this case, the workstation is known to be capable of connecting to GallantWEB's IPSec VPN.

Can the GallantWEB act as a PPTP VPN client to MS PPTP VPN Server?
GallantWEB is a PPTP VPN Server to Microsoft PPTP client (Windows stations) but not the other way around.

What is the maximum number of VPN connection the GallantWEB can handle?
As long as the bandwidth permits, the GallantWEB supports hundreds of remote PPTP clients accessing the office network simultaneously.

As for IPSec VPN, as long as the bandwidth permits, the GallantWEB can link tens of offices together.

Can the GallantWEB VPN support Macintosh client?
No, there is no built-in PPTP VPN Client on the Macintosh Operating system.
